FAD Documentation in the Eastern Pacific Ocean
Fish aggregation device (FAD) documentation in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The Ecuadorean purse seiners 'Cabo Marzo', 'Monteneme', 'Ingalapagos' and 'Ocean Lady' were spotted by the crew of the Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza. Purse seine fishing vessels set their huge nets on these FADs taking everything with them, including a large bycatch of unwanted fish. Their bycatch included: juvenile bigeye tuna, juvenile yellowfin tuna, black marlin, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, triggerfish, mahi mahi, green sea turtle and Olive Ridley turtle. Greenpeace has confiscated several FADs which are currently banned in pockets of the Pacific Ocean. Greenpeace is calling for a total ban on the use of fish aggregation devices (FADs), and the establishment of a global network of marine reserves.
