According to the locals, the fertile soil in Gaojiapu village used to be good to grow watermelons and rice. But the land has been no longer suitable for farming in recent years since the Jinjie Industrial Park has been in use. Instead of farming the villagers have been planting trees which can survive in poor conditions near the river. Locations:Asia-China-East Asia-ShanxiDate:19 Dec, 2015Credit:© Nian Shan / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5616px X 3744pxKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Coal-Conflict-Day-Dry-High angle view-Industries-KWCI (GPI)-Outdoors-Pollution-Rivers-Rural scenes-Snow-Trees-Villages-WaterShoot:Water-Coal Conflict in ChinaIn Shenmu County, Yulin, Shanxi province, which has been one of the “Top 100 Prosperous Counties in China”, there are many so called “coal bosses”, who own luxury cars and assets worth more than hundreds of millions. However, the coal industry in this area has been declining. Coal mining and the use of water resources by the coal industry has damaged the ecosystem and in recent years one tributary of the Yellow River flowing through this area has suffered flow disruption. Crops production in some places dropped, reservoirs dried up, ground collapsed and walls of houses cracked forcing villagers to move out.Related Collections:World Water Day 2016Water-Coal Conflict in China
