Soberanes Fire in California
Spanning more than 68,500 acres, the Soberanes Fire broke out on July 23, 2016 in Monterey County near Big Sur in Northern California. There have been massive evacuations, more than 50 homes destroyed, and one fatality.
This is just one of many fires that have spread throughout California this summer, primarily due to the prolonged drought that has caused a massive bark beetle infestation, resulting in more than 66 million dead trees and an elevated fire risk.
