The Treasure of Mauritania
Rushes for documentary made by Greenpeace Spain entitled 'The Treasure of Mauritania', about the problem of overfishing in Mauritania. 25 years ago Mauritania began to sell fishing rights to Russian and Romanian fishing fleets and later expanded this to many other countries. Mauritania is currently in a crisis as it depends on the money it receives from the European Union but there is now too much competition between local fishers and foreign companies and fish stocks are dwindling. The latest problem is that the Dutch pelagic fishing industry wants to exploit these waters with huge super trawlers which would be a catastrophe for the food chain, fish stocks and species and artisanal African fishermen.
