Forest Destruction in Sumatra

Peatland forest alongside cleared and drained peatland in preparation for plantation establishment in PT Tri Pupajaya. The concession is a supplier of pulpwood to Asia Pulp and Paper (APP). Much of the concession is on peatland and rainforest within the concession is identified as habitat for the critically-endangered Sumatran tiger.

Greenpeace, together with representatives from the National Parliament and the Indonesian National Police, bear witness to the huge destruction of Indonesia’s natural peatland forest in Sumatra. Deforestation is a key source of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions, making the country the third largest contributor to global emissions.
Greenpeace is demanding the Indonesian government to fully review the existing logging concessions and to institute full protection of peatland and natural forests, in line with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s commitment to reduce Indonesia emissions.
