Alliance between Guajajara people from the Arariboia Indigenous Land and firefighters from Maranhão state, in Brazil, tries to end the fire on the most conserved part of the forest within the territory. On the site also live about 80 Awá-Guajá isolated people, who are threatened by the fire, the largest ever recorded in indigenous lands in Brazil. 45% of 413,000 hectares of land have been destroyed. The lack of an effective policy to protect indigenous lands allows illegal logging and increases the risk that fires like these can happen in other lands, since the degradation caused by illegal logging makes the forests vulnerable to fire. 

Aliança entre índios Guajajara da Terra Indígena Arariboia e bombeiros do Maranhão tenta impedir que o fogo avance sobre a parte mais conservada de floresta dentro do território. No local, vivem também cerca de 80 Awá-Guajá isolados, que estão ameaçados pelo fogo. O incêndio dura dois meses e é o maior já registrado em terras indígenas no Brasil. 45% dos 413 mil hectares do território foram destruídos. A falta de uma política eficaz de proteção das terras indígenas permite o roubo de madeira e aumenta o risco de que incêndios como esses possam se repetir em outras terras, já que a degradação causada pela atividade madeireira ilegal torna a floresta vulnerável ao fogo.
