GE Papaya actions in Thailand and Hawaii
In 2004 Greenpeace activists in Thailand seal off the GE papaya at the Khon Kaen, an agricultural research station of the Department of Agriculture, demanding that the government complete this process and immediately destroy all papaya trees, fruit, seedlings, and seeds in the research station to prevent further contamination.
In 2006 Greenpeace activsts, local farmers and Hawaiian coalition groups, all opposing the release of genetic engineered papaya, helped to decontaminate a local farm. The farmer has suffered loses due to contamination of his organic crop which can fetch up to three times the price of GE papaya but only if un-contaminated.
The Hawaiian and Thai Governments and industry need to pull back from this economically, environmentally, and export-damaging technology. They need to look closely at the evidence provided from both regions and then move towards supporting and nurturing the conventional and organic papaya growers upon whom, ultimately, the burden of GE contamination will fall.
