Genetic Engineering Action Maize Field in Arnhem the Netherlands

Twenty Greenpeace activists stop the spread of genetically engineered maize pollen on an experimental field near Arnhem by putting plastic bags over the male flowers of thousands of plants to prevent them from spreading to nearby fields. They also mark the field with a warning ribbon and place a banner with the text 'Zaai veilig of zaai niet', which translates to English as 'Sow safe or don’t sow at all'. The action is a protest against testing genetically engineered maize and other GE crops in open fields. The testing field is an experiment of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture. According to Greenpeace genetic engineering is an unreliable technique with unpredictable consequences for humankind and the environment.
