Locations:Europe, East Europe, Alpine Countries-Geneva-SwitzerlandDate:21 Jul, 2003Credit:© Greenpeace / Ex-Press / David AdairMaximum size:3024px X 2016pxRestrictions:Images ok for use in all Greenpeace campaigns, products and brochures. The protest is against the fact that genetic engineering is forced upon consumers by the U.S. Greenpeace volunteers dressed as Uncle Sam dump GE maize on other volunteers representing consumers in straitjackets, suffocating their demand for the right to say no to GE food. The activists replaced the insignia of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) headquarters in Geneva with a new sign "World Transgenic Order", denouncing the WTO for promoting corporate interests of the genetic engineering (GE) industry. "The WTO is used by the U.S. to force GE food upon consumers. The intention of the U.S. complaint is an undermining of legitimate, democratically adopted laws to protect people against possible adverse effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)", says Greenpeace genetic engineering expert Bruno Heinzer.
