Greenpeace Activists Map Out Areas in Spessart
Greenpeace activists continue to map out areas in the Spessart Mountains. They start with a beech forest with about 200 year old trees in the area of the forest management Hammelburg. Activists measure perimeter and diameter of trees and use GPS technology for the monitoring of ecologically valuable old trees.
The area is part of the public forest in the Bavarian Spessart Mountains and managed by Bavarian State forest enterprise (BaySF). As owner of these forests, the Bavarian State refuses to provide information about the exact location and management of old beech and deciduous forests in this part of the Spessart Mountains. Greenpeace demands that logging in public forests is immediately stopped in all deciduous forests with beech trees older than 140 years, until an agreement is made to protect 10 percent of the German state owned forests from any forestry uses.
