Hands off Australians’ Tax Money Action in Sydney
Greenpeace takes action at the Prospect Mining Awards, the annual awards ceremony for the mining industry at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth Hotel.
Activists have set up a ‘Cash for Coal’ gameshow booth inside the venue, dressed as Liberal party politicians, inviting coal company executives to literally grab for cash in order to highlight the massive taxpayer subsidies that go to fossil fuels each year.
The Australian Government provides $1.8 billion in production subsidies to the coal mining industry every year. According to the IMF, Australia provides fossil fuel subsidies equivalent to $1,712 per person per year, or around $40 billion a year.
