Helenira Resende Camp in Pará State
The Helenira Resende Camp, a land in southern Para occupied in 2009 by 642 families belonging to the Landless Workers Movement (MST). The camp occupies 50 hectares within the Cedro ranch, an estate covering a total area of almost 15,000 hectares. Occupations produce conflicts with local ranch owners, who have joined forces and hired private armed guards to intimidate the landless farmers and destroy their crops. Since 1996 more than 271 rural workers and leaders have been killed in Pará alone as consequence of the land conflict with ranch owners.
