The surface of the glacier is covered with pot holes like these, which are often perfectly circular to the eye. The black granular cryoconite accelerates melting because the darker part of the spectrum lowers the albedo or reflectance of the usually white ice. A combination of these darker deposits, warmer melt water, the sun and the wind conspire to make these intriguingly geometric pot-holes in the ice. The sizes typically vary between 3cm and 30 cm in diameter and are between 3 and 500 cm deep.Locations:North America-Petermann Glacier-Western GreenlandDate:6 Jul, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceLatitude:81°2'57"NMaximum size:3744px X 5616pxLongitude61°34'41"WKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Cold-Copy space-Day-Glacier melt-Glaciers-High angle view-Ice-Icescapes-Outdoors-WhiteShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:Best of Arctic Impacts ExpeditionArctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)Petermann Glacier in Greenland
