Activists on board the Greenpeace ship Esperanza documented two large methane leaks located in the British exclusive economic zone (at positions 57°55.30'N, 001°37.87'E and 57°54.81'N, 001°38.72'E) in the North Sea. Caused by a major blow-out incident during a gas drilling operation 30 years ago, the leak is still emitting the highly potent greenhouse gas methane.Statement: Greenpeace expert Dr. Sandra Schoettner. Locations:Europe-North Sea-United KingdomDate:14 Aug, 2020Credit:© GreenpeaceDuration:4m47sAudio format:NaturalProduction Type :NEWS ACCESS-SOUNDBITEKeywords:Aerial view-Banners-British Petroleum (BP)-Climate (campaign title)-Crabs-Day-Destruction-Fossil fuel (energy)-Greenpeace activists-Greenpeace campaigners-KWCI (GPI)-Marine pollution-MY Esperanza-Natural gas-Oceans (campaign title)-Oceans (topography)-Plaice-Remotely operated vehicles-Seas-Shells (animal)-Speeches-Underwater shotsShoot:Protect the North Sea: Esperanza Tracking the Fossil Fuel Industry (Videos & Stills from Drone Footage)The Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza is on a month-long documentation and peaceful protest tour in the North Sea. Teams on board will gather evidence of the extreme industrialization of the region by the oil and gas industry, which has been polluting the ocean and fuelling the climate crisis with a “business as usual” attitude for several decades.Related Collections:Protect the North Sea: Esperanza Tracking the Fossil Fuel Industry (Selection of Photos & Videos)Investigation of a Methane Leak in the North Sea (Photos & Videos)
