Locations:Alpine Countries-Berlin-Brandenburg Gate-Europe-GermanyDate:20 Apr, 2007Credit:© Andreas Schoelzel / GreenpeaceMaximum size:3000px X 1993pxKeywords:Actions and protests-Banners-Climate (campaign title)-Climate change-Day-Energy-Energy efficiency-Greenpeace activists-Iconic Landmarks-Incandescent light bulbs-KWCI (GPI)-Light bulbs-Low angle view-Machinery-Outdoors-Small group of peopleShoot:Light Bulb Climate Action in BerlinAs G8 and EU ministers gather in Berlin to discuss energy efficiency measures, Greenpeace uses a mechanised road roller to crush ten thousand energy-wasting light bulbs at the Brandenburg Gate, demanding tough European efficiency standards for energy using products, and an immediate ban on incandescent light bulbs. An incandescent light bulb wastes 95% of its energy generating heat instead of light. Although cheaper to buy than energy efficient bulbs, incandescent bulbs cost consumers almost 200 euros a year in wasted electricity, and contribute millions of tons of greenhouse gases in the generation of this wasted power.
