Halong Glacier is situated within Sanjiangyuan nature reserve, at the headwaters of the Yellow River.
Halong glacier is 1200 meters shorter than it was just 30 years ago. Between 1987 and 2006, the glacier retreated 32,000 m2 per year, and between 2006-2017, the rate of retreat nearly doubled, to 72,000 m2 per year. In 2017 the total area measured 19.73 k2.
