Charlotte Brower won the elections with 1022 votes to George Ahmaogaks 960. The charges brought by Ahmaogak have not specifically mentioned when or where the violations have taken place or who has been responsible for the irregularities. Ahmaogak has been mayor five times before and has worked as Alaska affairs manager for the oil giant Shell who now plan to drill offshore in 2012. "I have taxed oil and gas property since 1972. I have always spoken out against offshore drilling and I personally don’t think they are ready for it yet. But on the other hand new oil has to be found and our society is dependent on taxes from the industry for our services like hospitals and schools", says Ahmaogak.Locations:Alaska-Arctic-Arctic Coastal Plain-Barrow (Alaska)-North America-United States of AmericaCredit:© Rose Sjölander / 70°Maximum size:5380px X 3586pxRestrictions:Ok for Greenpeace use and for approved external Greenpeace campaign related use. Shell's proposed offshore drill site is in the path of the bowhead whale's migration route. Many Inupiat hunters are concerned about Shell's lack of spill response capabilities if licenses are granted to drill offshore in the Arctic's Beaufort and Chukchi seasGreenpeace is campaigning for a global sanctuary to be declared around the uninhabited area of the North Pole to save the Arctic from attempts by oil companies to exploit the region’s resources for short term profit.
