Bergs and other calved debris can be seen In the far distance, floating in the fjord of Kane Basin. As melt-lakes like this get larger in the warmer atmospheric temperatures of summer, the accumulated mass of water exploits weaknesses in the glacier's surface and flows outwards towards the sea via ravines, crevasses and moulins. Humboldt is the widest glacier in the northern hemisphere, it has a front of 110 kilometers across.Locations:Greenland-Humboldt Glacier-Kane Basin-North America-Western GreenlandDate:31 Jul, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5616px X 3744pxKeywords:Aerial view-Beauty-Blue-Climate (campaign title)-Copy space-Day-Glacier melt-Glaciers-KWCI (GPI)-Lakes-Melting-Nature-Outdoors-Scenic-Seascapes-WhiteShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:IPCC Report Release (All Photographers, Photos & Videos)Sea Ice Minimum (Photo + Video)Arctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)
