Activists hold signs outside the White House during a rally to deliver 13,500 photo petitions to the White House's Council on Environmental Quality to stop mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia. The rally became a memorial to Larry Gibson, a longtime and outspoken opponent of mountaintop removal mining, who lived on Kayford Mountain on land in his family for more than 200 years as coal companies removed the mountain above his home for coal.
