The action is to highlight the problems related to the construction of the European Pressurized Reactor, the latest generation of French nuclear power plants which the industry regards as the ‘flagship’ of a so-called nuclear renaissance. Greenpeace is also objecting the attempts by the nuclear lobby to lower safety standards for nuclear plants across the European Union which could place a stranglehold on national authorities wishing to impose stricter standards. In addition, Greenpeace states that by artificially lowering the costs of any future nuclear plants, weaker safety standards would help open the door for an expansion of nuclear power and expose the environment and public safety to greater nuclear risks.
