They hang a huge banner reading 'Kernafval: 240.000 jaar radioactief', which translates to English as 'Nuclear waste: 240,000 years radioactive'. Today the first transport of high level radioactive waste takes place. The nuclear waste from the nuclear power plant Borssele will be transported from La Hague in France to Covra in Vlissingen. Covra (Central Organization for Radioactive Waste) is owner of HABOG and the nuclear power plant Borssele. The transport that returns today from France will be the first of at least seven transports with high level radioactive waste. Before the nuclear waste from Borssele can be stored, it has to be transported to La Hague in France to reprocess the waste. After returning in the Netherlands the waste will be stored at Covra for one hundred years and what will happen next is still uncertain. The nuclear reprocessing is disastrous for the environment and proliferation. Despite the pollution and international treaties that commit the Netherlands to store nuclear waste immediately, Borssele continues this polluting process. Greenpeace demands from the government to stop with nuclear energy and to invest in sustainable energy like sun, wind and biomass.
