The spill began on August 11 when Solar 1, a Petron-chartered single hull vessel, carrying 2.1 million litres of oil, sank in the Guimaras Strait, about 500km southeast of Manila. According to Coast guard, district commander Capt Luis Tuazon, about 350 000 litres of oil had already been spilled from the tanker. Greenpeace called on the Philippine government to hold oil firm Petron and its partners accountable for damages to the environment and people’s livelihoods resulting from the worst oil spill in Philippine history.Locations:Barangay Tando-Nueva Valencia-Philippines-Southeast AsiaDate:21 Aug, 2006Credit:© Greenpeace / Gavin NewmanMaximum size:3000px X 1984pxKeywords:Boats-Cleaning-Day-Disasters-Forests (topography)-KWCI (GPI)-Local population-Marine pollution-Oceans (campaign title)-Oceans (topography)-Oil (Industry)-Oil booms (containment)-Oil spills-Oiled beaches-Outdoors-People-Small group of people-SwimmingShoot:Defending Our Oceans Tour in the PhilippinesThe Esperanza is in the Philippines to highlight the threat of pollution as well as documenting the success of Marine Reserves.Related Collections:Defending Our Oceans Tour in the Philippines (Photo & Video)
