Oil in the Northeast - Caravelas (Bahia)
Professor Anders Schmidt, PhD in Oceanography, accompanies volunteers at the installation of the oil containment barrier in Caravelas, southern Bahia, Brazil. Formed by an impermeable blanket, anchored at the mouth of the river mouth and supported by steel pipes and eucalyptus trunks, the barrier acts according to tidal movement and prevents massive entry of crude oil into the mangrove that houses crabs-uçá and seafood in which the local community, made up of fishermen and artisanal shellfish, takes their livelihood. The crude oil spill hit the entire northeastern coast and part of the southeast coast of Brazil in the second half of 2019.

Óleo no Nordeste - Caravelas (Bahia)
