Opening of Robert Knoth Nuclear Photo Exhibition
Today opens the photo exhibition Nr.000358 of photographer Robert Knoth at Newsphoto in Amsterdam. This month Knoth's portraits of nuclear devastation in the former Soviet Union is launched internationally by Greenpeace. The exhibition is about the forgotten victims of nuclear power suffering the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster (1986) nearly twenty years after the reactor's core exploded releasing clouds of radioactive material into the environment. The photos focuse on the lingering effects of nuclear power as we approach the twentieth anniversary of the Chernobyl reactor meltdown and explosion. Nuclear energy is the most dangerous means ever devised to generate electricity. Robert Knoth travelled in 2006 to the Ukraine and White Russia, the Russian places Majak and Tomsk and the Kazakh Semipalatinsk. In all these places people and environment are exposed daily to radioactive radiation.
