People Vs Shell Action in Czech Republic
Kayaktivists from six European countries join a global movement to protect the Arctic from oil drilling. The event takes place in Cesky Krumlov (Ceský Krumlov) - a beautiful historical town on the river Vltava - which is under UNESCO protection as a world cultural heritage site. A model of the huge Polar Pioneer oil rig was placed in the very centre of the town. The activists - some of them dressed as polar bears - came along the river on kayaks and canoes to hold a symbolic blockade to support the Global week of action against Shell's drilling plans in the Arctic.
The message was clear - to drill in the Arctic is as absurd as to drill in the heart of UNESCO world heritage site.
