Point Hope Cemetery in Alaska
Point Hope cemetery on the North Slope Borough, Alaska. The cemetery fence consists of whale bones, primarily from Bowhead whales which the Eskimo people have been subsistence hunting, a central part of their culture.
Point Hope is one of the oldest continually occupied sites in North America. The community and the surrounding ocean habitat are threatened by offshore oil drilling, as well as industrial fishing fleets.
