Portland Bridge Activists (close-ups clipreel)
Activist climbers hang under the St. Johns Bridge over the Willamette River to block the Shell leased icebreaker MSV Fennica. The vessel tore a hole in its hull en route to the Chukchi Sea in the Alaskan Arctic and was brought to Portland for repair. The climbers, have rappelled off the St. Johns Bridge and blocked Shell's Arctic icebreaking vessel, the MSV Fennica, as it attempted to leave Portland, Oregon. The climbers are currently preventing the ship from passing underneath the bridge on its way to meet Shell’s drilling fleet. The climbers have enough supplies to last for several days. According to the latest federal permit, the Fennica must be at Shell’s drill site before Shell can reapply for federal approval to drill deep enough for oil in the Chukchi Sea.

Shell Bridge Blockade in Portland (Video)
Shell’s damaged icebreaker, the Fennica, went to Portland, Oregon, where workers repaired a meter-long gash in its hull that it suffered while attempting to travel north. Because the Fennica carries a mission-critical piece of safety equipment, Shell cannot drill into oil-bearing rock formations until it is fixed and returns to the Arctic.
Activists are hanging off the St John's bridge in Portland, Oregon, to stop the Fennica from reaching the Arctic where Shell plans to drill for oil.
