Locations:Europe, West Europe-Netherlands-Rotterdam-Rotterdam HarbourDate:14 Nov, 2000Credit:© Greenpeace / Ben DeimanMaximum size:1728px X 1152pxKeywords:Actions and protests-Climate (campaign title)-Climate change impacts-Coal-Day-Energy-Greenpeace activists-Happiness-Inspirational-KWCI (GPI)-Outdoors-Power stations-WomenShoot:Climate Action COP6 Returning Coal Rotterdam HarbourGreenpeace blocks the transport of coal in the Rotterdam harbor as a protest against the use of coal as an energy source. Activists chained themselves to the machinery and coal is being intercepted to prevent them from being burned. The burning of coal leads to the emission of CO2, one of the most important causes of global warming. Through an internetsite people could give Greenpeace permission to return the amount of coal they use per year to the cargoship which brought the coal to the power plant. About 5.500 people ordered 'their' coal, 5.6 million kilo, should be brought back to the ship to prevent further CO2 emissions. During the climate conference this week in the Hague, 180 countries negotiate on how the Kyoto Protocol (Japan, 1997) should be carried out. In the Kyoto Protocol is agreed that industrialized countries will bring down their CO2 emissions with 5.2% around 2010. But to stop the climate change, we need about 80% reduction of the emissions.
