Quit Coal: Round Table with "Die Linke" - News Access
Berlin 2014-05-27: According to Greenpeace, with the plan of the red-red federal government in Potsdam to continue opencast lignite mining at Welzow Süd II, the left-wing party Die Linke is contradicting its own energy policy claiming to campaign for a nationwide coal phase-out. In protest against the climate-damaging open-cast mine as well as the resettlement of hundreds of people, Greenpeace activists hang a banner reading: "100 % untrustworthy! Die Linke – End Coal!" onto the Karl Liebknecht building and set up a protest camp in the inner courtyard of the party headquarters. Representatives of Greenpeace and Die Linke come together for a round table. Greenpeace demands a clear position on the new open-cast mine in Welzow Süd from party leader Katja Kipping.
Statements: Tobias Münchmeyer, energy expert at Greenpeace Germany; Matti Nedoma, legal advisor of the Proschim Company Association.
Also to be seen: Katja Kipping, Federal Chairwoman of Die Linke; Carsten Smid, energy and climate expert at Greenpeace Germany (next to T. Münchmeyer).
