Reef Investigation in Apo Island
Greenpeace divers, together with scientists from Silliman University, Apo island community members, Marine protected area management board, Apo island dive wardens, place a coral module at the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Apo Island, Dauin, Negros Occidental. These modules are made up of old coral rubbles and cement and will encourage coral growth so the reef can recover quickly.
The Marine Protected Area (MPA) was destroyed by Typhoon Pablo in December 2012. An increase in extreme weather events is one of the predicted effects of climate change. Greenpeace is in Apo island as part of its Philippine leg of the “Ocean Defenders Tour of South East Asia".
