Sweden is in the front line as the world embarks on a shift to more sustainable energy systems. 45 percent of Sweden’s energy supply—electricity, district heating and fuel—comes from renewable energy, which is more than in most EU countries. The reason for this is the large share of hydropower and biofuels in the energy system. Combined heat and power (CHP), plants account for 12 percent of the electricity output in Sweden, and are mainly powered by biofuels.
