Their home and Leo’s custom motorcycle business in West End were affected by the flood waters. The family was also impacted by the Brisbane floods of 2011. Leo says: “The sheer force of the water exiting the driveway was incredible. You could see a current through the water. The water pulled the front gate off its track.”Leo and Carolyn are industrial designers, and they are currently renovating their home to suit more frequent flooding events. “We were planning to use the ground level as storage but thinking that will be as minimalist as possible and things that are quick to move and washable.” After this flood, they are considering raising the whole house even higher.Leo says: “Most people know that leadership doesn’t have our interest at heart. Clearly the people getting into power are in there for self serving interests as opposed to actually representing a community, either on a local level or nationally.”Locations:Australia-Brisbane-OceaniaDate:4 Mar, 2022Credit:© Tammy Law / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5386px X 3591pxRestrictions:NO FUNDRAISINGKeywords:Children-Climate (campaign title)-Day-Families-Floods-Houses-KWCI (GPI)-Local population-Outdoors-Parents-Three people-VictimsShoot:Clean up after Floods in Brisbane, AustraliaBrisbane residents describe their experiences of recent floods after a record-breaking 792 millimetres of rain fell on the city within three days, impacting an estimated 15,000 homes. In late February and March 2022, intense rainfall and floods affected millions of residents in Queensland and New South Wales, causing devastating loss of life and an estimated AUD$5billion worth of damage. Greenpeace Australia Pacific has long advocated for a climate compensation fund paid for by the coal, oil and gas companies whose activities are fuelling the climate crisis and the ensuing increase in destructive extreme weather events like these floods.
