Run for Radulovtsi – Sports Event for Protection of Nature in Bulgaria
People from small villages near the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, who want to protect nature from destruction by a future coal mine are joined by Greenpeace activists and runners in a sports event with a cause, called "Run for Radulovtsi. Outrun the mine".
Since 2018 Greenpeace Bulgaria and FoE Bulgaria (Za Zemiata) have been supporting the struggle of farmers and the Municipality of Slivnitsa against the opening of a lignite mine, less than 50 km away from the capital of Bulgaria.
Despite the objections during the assessment of the environmental impacts of this project, the company received the right to mine the area in 2018. The last resort left for the local owners of land was to object to the concession rights, granted to the company, in court. The case is still ongoing.
The event was supported by the Municipality of Slivnitsa and several famous Bulgarian trail runners, including the international star in trail running and orienteering Kiril Nikolov – Disl, Ivaylo Atanassov, a trail running champion who has dedicated all his competitions this year to Extinction Rebellion, the olympic cross-country skier Antonia Grigorova, and Dimitar Dimitrov, an organiser of several internationally famous extreme sports events.
