San Pedro River Pollution in Mexico
A discharge pipe. The river receives discharges from different types of industries like textiles, including the Lavamex facility. This tributary reaches the Santiago River, in the neighboring state of Jalisco, which is one of the most polluted rivers in Mexico. In a country where more than 70% of water bodies are polluted. Less than 20 parameters are regulated regarding discharge into national water bodies, while hundreds of chemicals are used and released each day. A sample taken by Greenpeace activists and analyzed in the University of Exeter showed presence of toxic chemicals like nonyl phenol, a hormonal disruptor.

San Pedro River Pollution in Mexico
In Mexico, industries discharge toxic substances into rivers and lagoons. 70% of the water has some level of pollution from all sources, in some cases due to hazardous chemicals. The most critical cases are
the Atoyac (between Puebla and Tlaxcala) and the Santiago (between Jalisco and Nayarit). However, this is a problem present in the whole country. The Mexican government only regulates 17 parameters regarding water discharges into rivers but recently, Greenpeace discovered an official report admitting that in Santiago River contains 1090 chemical substances in the river, including some hazardous substances which are used by the industry.
