Santa Cristina - Bottom Trawler Tour 2005
The Santa Cristina, from Portugual, bottom trawls for Deep Sea Red Fish (Sabastes Marinus) at depths of 650 meters in the North Atlantic Ocean (NAFO Division 3-o). Greenpeace has been documenting and protesting the high seas bottom trawl fleets in the Northwest Atlantic. Greenpeace is calling on governments to put in place a UN moratorium on high seas bottom trawling because it is an unsustainable fishing technique that has destructive impacts on the marine ecosystems and poses serious threats to deep sea fish species.
