Scientific Research on Tropical Peatland in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Congo Basin Experts from the UK and DRC takes first samples from the Peatland. A team from Greenpeace Africa are working with local partners to conduct scientific research in the village of Lokolama, 45 km from Mbandaka. The team aim to identify the presence of tropical peatlands in the region, and to measure its depth.

Peatland Forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Documentation of ground-level research into satellite data on vast peatland areas recently discovered by scientists in the swamps of the Congo Basin rainforest, as well as affected communities and the natural environment. The most carbon-rich tropical region in the world is estimated to store the equivalent of three years’ worth of total global fossil fuel.
