Associate scientist Fiamma Straneo, from the physical oceanography department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, working on the Greenpeace 2009 expedition where she installs the moorings which will be collected in summer 2010. She deploys an expendable bathythermograph or XBT which is fired through the loose ice debris into the fjord below. Data concerning temperature and depth is received through a thin wire which links the device with the helicopter.
