This photo was taken off the backyard reef of a house on the lagoon side. Many people have built seawalls in recent years to protect their homes from king tides, flooding and coastal erosion.Locations:Majuro Atoll-Marshall Islands-Micronesia-Pacific IslandsDate:13 Nov, 2018Credit:© Genevieve French / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5597px X 3731pxKeywords:Beaches-Climate (campaign title)-Climate change-Climate change impacts-Day-Erosion-Flood defenses-Floods-Islands-KWCI (GPI)-Outdoors-Sea level rise-WallsShoot:Climate Change Impacts in the Marshall IslandsKing tides and coastal flooding have been worsening in the Marshall Islands. Located on low-lying coral atolls, these islands are extremely susceptible to sea level rise and king tides. Adaptation efforts across Majuro Atoll are already being widely used - including building sea walls, elevating houses and climate-proofing infrastructures. King tides have affected the Rita end of Majuro Atoll particularly with many houses in the area damaged and abandoned due to flooding and coastal erosion. These photos were taken ahead of the Climate Vulnerability Forum (CVF) in November 2018.
