Vivek Mundkur with Solar Water Pump in India
The Greenpeace Argentina Innovation Lab and Greenpeace India had invited people worldwide to join in the Clean solar pump Innovation Challenge. For the project "A Watershed Moment in India" nearly a thousand active participants from 58 countries worldwide followed the call and in their collaboration created a completely new product category: portable, renewable energy powered pumps strong enough to irrigate a typical Indian family farm but costing only a fraction of the price of current RE pumps in the market.
Vivek Mundkur was winner of the second prize. With his company Atom Solar in Pune he works on further development of his solar powered irrigation pump.
It's called the Atom Solar Suntrolley, a 1 horse power portable solar water pumping system which can replace diesel irrigation pumps for small farmers. It can deliver 10,000 litres of water per hour. The key features of the pump are that it is portable, and can be assembled within 10 minutes anywhere.
Diesel is a rising cost for farmers, leading to inconsistencies in their profits. Using a portable solar irrigation pump can solve issues related to it.
