Solling Beech Tree Forest in Germany
Greenpeace activists mapped the Solling beech tree forest (Lower Saxony) in autumn. They documented the tree population of beeches and oaks older than 140 years as well as logging and clearcuts in the area. Activists measure the extent and diameter of trees and use GPS technology for the monitoring of the ecologically valuable old trees. Greenpeace demands that logging in public forests is immediately stopped in all deciduous forests with beech trees older than 140 years, until an agreement is made to protect 10 percent of the German public forests from any forestry uses.
