Sowing Organic Seeds on Monsanto GE Testing Field in Netherlands
With the help of two confetti machines Greenpeace activists sow organic flower seeds mixture on a Monsanto testing field with genetically engineered maize. Greenpeace hereby makes the test unusable because the flowers will grow faster than the maize, and will prevent the spread of genetically engineered pollen. The banner reads: "Zaai Veilig of Zaai Niet" or in English: "Sow safely or don't sow at all". Greenpeace is against these testing fields because of the unpredictable results for humankind and the environment.

Sowing Organic Seeds on Monsanto GE Testing Field in Netherlands
With the help of two confetti machines, Greenpeace activists sow organic flower seeds mixture on a Monsanto testing field with genetically engineered maize. Greenpeace is against these testing fields because of the unpredictable results for humankind and the environment. The banner reads: "Zaai veilig of Zaai niet", or in English: "Sow safely or don't sow at all".
"With these testing fields Monsanto is trying to find out whether there still is social resistance towards genetic engineering." says Herman van Bekkem, leader of the Genetic Engineering Campaign at Greenpeace the Netherlands. "It is unbelievable that the Dutch government approves of the genetic tests of this American company. The products of Monsanto have a long history of negative effects towards both humans and the environment."
While in Europe the critiques on genetic engineering grows, experiments in the Netherlands are being increased. The testing field in Lelystad is one of the 4 places where Monsanto is allowed to conduct experiments with NK603. Also there are 5 locations where the company Pioneer Hi-bred is allowed to experiment with comparable GE maize. Greenpeace finds this unacceptable.
The European Environmental Committee decided yesterday that the admission for genetic testing has to be restricted and has to be truly independent. Only in this way it is possible to efficiently estimate the dangers for humankind and the environment. Recently COGEM (Nederlandse wetenschappelijke commissie voor gentech or: the Dutch scientific committee for genetic engineering) concluded that these crops don't fit in with the Dutch agriculture system.
The genetically engineered maize NK603 of Monsanto is manipulated in such way that it is resistant to Roundup, an agricultural toxic produced by Monsanto itself. From several examples it clearly shows that these genetic engineered crops are meant for large scale mono-cultures. These will lead to even more use of agricultural toxins and deforestation.
Greenpeace wants the Dutch government to choose for sustainable agriculture and stop the use and testing of genetic engineering. Greenpeace, together with beekeepers and farmers, started a legal procedure against these tests of Monsanto. While the procedure is still running, Monsanto just decided to start with the testing fields.
