Sperm Whale in Israel

Greenpeace Israel, in collaboration with the Greenpeace International Research Unit and researchers from the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station at the Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa, launched the first part of the most comprehensive marine mammal population survey conducted in Israel's economic waters, an area that has hardly been explored and where about 15,000 square kilometers are about to be opened for new gas and oil drilling for export. The team on board of the SY Witness spotted a pod of about eight sperm whales off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea near Haifa, at 14 km and 28 km off Rosh Carmel beach. They also identified a single Cuvier's Beaked whale in the depths of the sea.
