Start of the `Arctic under Pressure Expedition´in Germany - News Access
On May 14 the Greenpeace expedition vessel 'Esperanza' leaves the port of Kiel in North Germany for a four month expedition to the Arctic. With this expedition GP supports the work of scientists from the Institute IFM GEOMAR who do research on the threat to the Arctic. The itinery will focus on research about ocean acidification, the decline of the Arctic sea ice and melting of Greenlands glaciers as well as fisheries. Additionally unknown sea regions will be mapped close to the 'ice rim'.
Footage shows loading of the worldwide largest off-shore experimental facility on ocean acidification. The plant is built up of nine so-called 'mesocosms'.

Kiel, 14.5.2010: Das Greenpeace- Expeditionsschiff 'Esperanza' fährt auf eine viermonatige Expedition in die Arktis. Greenpeace unterstützt mit dieser Expedition die Arbeit von Wissenschaftlern des GEOMAR-Institutes, die die Bedrohungen der Arktis erforschen. Im Fokus der Reise stehen Untersuchungen zur Ozeanversauerung, der Rückgang des arktischen Meereises und die Gletscherschmelze Grönlands. Zusätzlich werden unbekannte Meeresregionen dicht an der 'Eiskante' kartiert und die Fischerei vor Ort dokumentiert.
Zu sehen:die Verladung der weltweit größten Off-Shore Experimentieranlage zur Ozeanversauerung. Sie besteht aus neun sogenannten Mesokosmen.
