Sulphur Deposits at Oil Refinery in Ballsh

Huge deposits of sulphur next to an oil refinery in Ballsh. Ballsh is a small town which has one of the only refineries still in full production. The refinery has never been modernized since construction in the late 1930's, and is now responsible for a lot of pollution both effecting the land and the people.

Documentation of Oil Industry in Albania

The three main areas of Albania oil production (Ballsh, Marinez, Kucove) are now almost derelict. The seldom attended refineries have leaks which are polluting the land and the drinking water. Workers and farmers are becoming ill. The land, drinking water  and the people are polluted. Petrol is hard to buy.
