This region comprises two survey blocks (southwest and west of the island of Crete) that are to be the focus of seismic testing and drilling of oil and gas by the oil giants Total and ExxonMobil along with the Greek company HELPE. The threats to these mammals if the oil companies' plans go ahead will be dire: extremely loud noise, pollution from seismic blasts or even an oil spill. The Mediterranean is a crucial ecosystem for marine life that is already experiencing the effects of the climate crisis. It’s more urgent than ever to protect its biodiversity and put an end to extractive fossil fuel plans supported by the Greek government.Locations:Europe-Greece-Mediterranean SeaDate:30 Aug, 2021Credit:© GreenpeaceDuration:4m4sAudio format:MuteProduction Type :B-ROLLKeywords:Aerial view from UAV-Banners-Dolphins-KWCI (GPI)-MY Arctic Sunrise-Oceans (campaign title)-Outdoors-Pods (animal group)-Seas-TotalFinaElfShoot:Survey for Cetaceans of the Hellenic Trench 2021A visual-acoustic survey was conducted by the Arctic Sunrise and Greenpeace Greece between the 20th August and 11th September 2021, with the aim of investigating the presence of cetaceans within the offshore region of the Hellenic Trench, west and southwest blocks.
