Toxic Fugitive Ship Carrying Asbestos Insulation
The Danish fugitive ship 'Kong Frederik IX' is seen here with its newly painted alias ‘Riky’. It is docked at the ship-breaking yard, no. 24, in Alang.
The toxic ship, which escaped the clutches of the Danish government, is carrying carcinogenic asbestos insulation. Its owners had been ordered to remain in Denmark until they had decontaminated the ship. They slipped out of a Danish port on March 16, 2005, hastily changed the ship's flag and name, and headed for the ship-breaking yard.
