Wandering Albatross in the Southern Ocean
Wandering Albatross flies over Drake Passage in the Southern Ocean.
No living bird has a larger wingspan than the Wandering Albatross; Almost 12 feet (3.5 meters) from wingtip to wingtip. They can live more than 50 years and typically spend much of their time in the air, one of these birds may fly several million miles in a lifetime – about 10 roundtrips from the Earth to the moon. They nest on remote, windswept Subantarctic islands like South Georgia, and spend the rest of their existence (sometimes years at a time) at sea, without touching land.
