It captures kinetic energy turning it into usable power while riding the waves. The 1600 tonne vessel, approximately 30 meters in length, is held in place by three wires anchored to the seabed below. The Penguin fleet may consist of anything from 1 or more units, depending on the desired energy production capacity. Only about 2 meters of each unit is visible above the surface. The Penguin is designed to be simple, reliable and extremely durable in order to withstand the harsh conditions of the ocean environment. The outer structure is made of tough, recyclable materials. All operational parts are placed inside of its protective cover. The Penguin represents great value over lifetime as its very low maintenance. Overall it has a longer lifecycle than an average wind power plant.Locations:Europe-Orkney Islands-Scotland-United KingdomDate:29 Sep, 2011Credit:© Steve Morgan / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5559px X 3706pxKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Day-KWCI (GPI)-Oceans (topography)-Outdoors-Ports-Power equipment-Power stations-Tidal energyShoot:Wave and Tidal Power on Orkney IslandsTidal power, also called tidal energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power - mainly electricity. As tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power, tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd is a renewable energy research and development business based in the Orkney Islands. The Scotrenewables Tidal Turbine is a unique floating tidal technology designed to minimise installation and operational costs. The system has been extensively trialled through scale model testing and a 250kW prototype -the SR250- is currently generating power in a two-year test programme in Orkney.
