Wildfire - Methane leaks in Schwechat OMV refinery
OMV & Borealis production site Schwechat is located next to Vienna. It is a big industry
area, where oil is refined as well as plastic and other chemicals are produced. The pictures
and videos show how gas is burned off (> gas flaring), but the combustion is incomplete.
What remains hidden to the eye, a special camera reveals: The emissions sometimes travel
long distances and still remain clearly visible. This means that substantial amounts of
leakage can be assumed, and the emissions, depending on the weather, can also have a
direct impact on the environment as well as on the climate.

Wildfire - Methane Leaks in Austria - Photos
Greenpeace Austria got a hold of a Flir GF320 camera, that is able to detect emissions that are normally invisible to the eye - such as f.e. methane. The team looked at different oil and gas sites of the Austrian Oil and Gas giant OMV to detect leaking pipelines. The main part of fossil gas is methane.
Methane directly released to the atmosphere is a very potent greenhouse gas, it’s 25 times more potent than CO2.
