Wildfires in Northern Evia, Greece

After a prolonged heatwave, the worst in over 30 years, in August 2021 wildfires wrought havoc in the Greek forests. The worst disaster occured in the island of Evia, its northern part, where the fire was burning for almost ten days. Thousands of hectares of virgin forest were ripped apart, dozens of villages were evacuated, the area's ecosystems have been devastated and many people lost their homes and their livelihoods, since they lived from the forest (beekeeping, agriculture etc).
